Enter Nusantara is a youth-led Indonesian initiative (since 2020) focused on climate justice and a coal-free future. It empowers youth (ages 17–29) through solar energy projects, anti-coal advocacy, and creative activism like workshops, zines, and podcasts. By uniting diverse movements across the country, the project fosters an inclusive, action-oriented community pushing for systemic change and a sustainable ecological transition.

Enter Nusantara is a youth-led initiative in Indonesia dedicated to building a just and sustainable ecological transition. With a population deeply affected by the impacts of climate change and a strong dependence on coal, Indonesia’s young generation has become a powerful force for change. This project empowers youth (aged 17 to 29) to take direct climate action through three interconnected pillars:

  1. Renewable energy implementation: Installing solar panels in communities across Indonesia.
  2. Campaigning for a coal ban: Organizing large-scale protests, advocacy campaigns, and direct engagement with stakeholders like banks and financial institutions still investing in fossil fuels.
  3. Youth engagement and creative activism: Fostering climate awareness through workshops, storytelling, games, zine-making, and exhibitions.

A youth-led, inclusive climate movement

Enter Nusantara was born out of a coalition of youths who recognized both the urgency of Indonesia’s climate crisis and the need for an inclusive movement that bridges divides between civil society organizations. The team, with three core members covering workshops, digital activism, and on-the-ground actions, builds spaces for learning, collaboration, and leadership.

Young people who join through social media open calls take part in various activities:

  • Hands-on solar energy installation projects
  • Workshops on renewable energy, digital campaigning, and climate storytelling
  • Public demonstrations and climate strikes
  • Documentary screenings followed by open discussions
  • Collaborative content creation, including zines, podcasts, and awareness games

Inclusivity is at the heart of the initiative, as Enter Nusantara actively seeks to unite diverse environmental movements across the archipelago through mutual support and solidarity.

Tools and content created

The project has produced a variety of communication tools and creative outputs to amplify youth voices:

  • Documentaries about youth-led energy transitions:
  • Action tools and guides for young activists on Instagram: See example
  • Participant-made media: podcasts, collaborative zines, and visual campaigns – Zine sample

One standout output is the Spill the Tea podcast, which tackles climate topics in a fun, honest, and youth-accessible way. Another is the BERAGAM exhibition and campaign, exploring Islamic financing and climate justice through a youth lens.

Looking toward the future

Enter Nusantara’s vision is bold and long-term: a coal-free Indonesia led by an informed, organized, and creative generation of youth climate leaders. The team sees their role not just in deploying clean energy technologies but in shaping a cultural and political shift across the country. They emphasize that youth are not just “the future” but active agents of the present, capable of shaping climate policy and reimagining how sustainability, justice, and finance intersect in Indonesia.
